Web browsers request pages from web servers by using a url.

When we click on a link in html page , <a> tag points to an address on the world wide web.

Uniform Resource Locator or url is used to address a document on the world wide web.

Web address like this http://www.ebookslab.org/ follows some syntax rules which are here:

scheme://host.domain:port/path/filename

Explanation are here:

  •  scheme – defines the type of internet service.  common type is http
  • host- defines the domain host (the default host for http is www)
  • domain- defines the Internet domain name like ebookslab.org
  • :port- defines the port number at the host (the default port number for http is 90)
  • path – defines path at the server (if omitted, the document must be stored at the root directory of the website)
  • filename – defines the name of a document/resource

Here are a table in which there are a list of some common schemes:

URLs can only be sent over the internet using the ASCII character set.

URLs often contain characters outside the ASCII character set

URL encoding replaces unsafe ASCII character with a “%” followed by two hexadecimal digits.

URLs can not contain spaces this encoding normally replaces a space with a + sign.
